NEW DELHI: Churchill Brothers FC have appointed Antonio Rueda as their new head coach for the 2021-22 Hero I-League season. The Spaniard has previously coached in the lower tiers of football in his home country with this being his first sojourn abroad, but he feels up to the challenge.
“Honestly, it was a quick and easy decision. When my agent told me about the possibility, I immediately knew that it was a great project and a great opportunity for me. I feel very lucky,” said Rueda. “I always like to be informed. I understand that football is a universal language and it is very similar in all regions, so adaptation is always easier.”
Coming from the Spanish school of footballing thought, it is not surprising to hear Rueda’s preferred style of play.
“I’m sure we’ll make a very attractive game. I really like having possession of the ball, being very intense when we lose the ball to get it back quickly and having players who associate well with each other,” he stated.
“The club is making a great effort so that the fans enjoy our game, and we have an obligation to achieve it. There are players who are impressing me a lot, so I’m sure we’re going to achieve our objetive,” he further said.
Rueda joins a growing list of Spanish coaches and players currently plying their trade in Indian football, but he did not feel the need to speak to any of them before making this decision.
“There was nothing to think about. The decision was very simple. I wanted to get to the club and I said so from the first moment,” he said.
The former Olivenza and Mora CF boss seems content with the current Churchill Brothers squad, having made a brief assessment.
“I am very happy with what I am seeing on an individual level. There are very good players, technically and tactically. I hope to contribute my work to achieve the objective,” said Rueda.
