SHILLONG: After two tough matches, Royal Wahingdoh FC will look to return to winning ways when they face Sporting Clube de Goa in a round six Hero I-League match at the JLN Stadium here on Sunday.
Wahingdoh experienced a heady start to their debut season in the prestigious football tournament with three wins on the trot, but were brought down to earth thanks to a defeat against Bengaluru and a draw against Dempo. Nevertheless, they must still be feeling a lot better than Sporting Clube, who have not won any of their four outings so far this season.
The Goan team’s coach, Mateus Costa, said he was happy after his boys drew against Mumbai FC in their last game given how low his men’s confidence was after two successive defeats at home. However, Sporting need a win and if that came in the difficult conditions of Shillong, the team’s confidence would soar.
Sandesh Jhingan has impressed all and the Flaming Orangje can also boast of Anthony Wolfe, Kalu Ogba and Boima Karpeh. This should make the squad a formidable outfit, but they have been lacking unity on the field, something that Wahingdoh have had no problems with.
Although RWFC may not be able to field some of the recognisable names that Sporting can, they have been led well by Densill Theobald and supported by the likes of Jackichand Singh, Kim Song Yong, Bekay Bawar and Seityasen Singh. The latter had to miss the last fixture against Dempo, but coach Santosh Kashyap will be eager to get him back in the team to boost their attacking strength.
