KOLKATA: Minerva Academy FC will be playing their second outing of the Second Division League tomorrow when they take on mighty Mohammedan Sporting Club at the Barasat Stadium. The match will kick off at 3:00 PM.
Minerva Academy FC are coming into the match, having played out a goalless draw against Neroca FC in their first outing in Imphal while Mohammedan Sporting Club has got a win behind their back.
But unfortunately, they have been stripped of the 3 points they earned against Lonestar Kashmir FC by FIFA Disciplinary Committee. Hence, they will have to start from scratch on Sunday.
For Minerva, it’s a must-win game to stay afloat in their quest for the coveted Hero I-League berth. After Neroca FC’s win over Dempo SC on Saturday, Minerva Academy FC need anything but a win to keep up with NEROCA.
“We will go into the match with a positive frame of mind, aiming for all three points. But we are playing a club with over 100 years of legacy and it’s not going to be easy,” said coach Surinder Singh in the pre-match press conference, “They have some very good and experienced players. Over and above, they are playing at home.”
Coincidentally, Minerva Academy FC will be led by Kareem Omolaja on Sunday, who was the captain of the Black Panthers at the start of the season. The Nigerian defender was snapped up by Minerva in the winter transfer window.
“It always feels good to come back to a place you were a part of before. But on Sunday, I will be wearing the Minerva Academy FC jersey and will do my best for my team,” he said.
“Both Minerva and Mohammedan are a good team and I am expecting a cracker of a match, played in the best game spirit,” Kareem concluded.
