NEW DELHI: After an unsuccessful campaign in the 2021 Hero I-League Qualifiers with FC Bengaluru United, Luka Majcen has been given another crack at the Hero I-League, this time by defending champions Gokulam Kerala.
The Slovenian forward had previously played for Churchill Brothers at this level and is hoping to hit the ground running for his new club.
“I’m very happy and honoured to join Gokulam Kerala. As a striker every club expects goals from you and it is no different here. I will try to score as many as possible to help the team but I think we have a very good team with a lot of good players who can score at any time, so actually I feel more relaxed and not pressured,” said Majcen.
Having scored 11 goals for Churchill Brothers in the previous campaign, the 32-year-old is a target-oriented person and is always looking to better his tally.
“Last year I said to myself that I want to score 10 goals and, in the end, I scored 11. Let’s say that this year’s target is 11. I set myself target and personal goals before every season but the team goals always come first,” he said.
Majcen enjoyed his time partnering Pedro Manzi up front at FC Bengaluru United and at Gokulam, he will have a different set of forwards to work with, including Ghanaian Rahim Osumanu.
“I wish we could have played longer together because I enjoyed playing with him (Manzi) very much. It is easier sometimes to play with another striker because you can share the workload but to tell you the truth I don’t really think about that stuff. I try to do what the coach wants and help the team as much as possible no matter the playing style,” said Majcen.
Gokulam Kerala will be playing in the AFC Cup later this year and the Slovenian is looking forward to making his, and the club’s, bow on the continental stage.
“We need to focus first on the Hero I-League but yes, the whole team is looking forward to it. These are the games on a bigger stage and every football player dreams of this and wants to play as many of them as possible,” he concluded.
