I-League Media Team

Chanmari FC, one of the two Mizoram based teams in the 2nd division I-League, have received huge plaudits from every corner of Indian football, all thanks to their opulent game in the ongoing  2nd Division I-League. Gaurav Chatterjee, the mastermind behind the success, sounds absolute determined to accomplish the goal i.e. the solitary I-League berth. I-League Media had a tete-a-tete session with him ahead of their all important Mohammedan SC game.

EXCERPTS:

Albeit the average height and age is significantly low compared to other teams, Chanmari FC has scored maximum goals and conceded just six. What’s the key behind that?

Power and Speed. Having grown up in hilly regions, they are mentally as well as physically very tough. Speed is an innate attribute of these Mizoram boys. Another key aspect is their bonding. Apart from those two foreigners (Joel and Patrick), all guys are from local villages. The language connection affects the team game massively. Most of the boys are playing together for 1.5 years, while a few even more.

Chanmari FC have represented Mizoram in Santosh Trophy. How is it influencing team performance in the 2nd division I-League?

Mizoram Football Association took an abrupt decision to send Chanmari FC in Santosh Trophy.  See, we were able to reach till Semi-final, which is not bad at all. Representing your state in India was the real catch, where the boys did an immaculate job. Although we could not win the Mizoram League this season, our hard work is paying off now, I must say.

Despite being ahead by 1 goal at the break, your team lost the tie against newbie LoneStar Kashmir other day. Were your boys a little jaded?

Not really. You can’t afford to miss out 4 open chances in such a tournament. It cost huge finally. Even after they scored the second goal, we hit the crossbar. The extra bit of luck was not in our side, anyways, it was just a bad day in office. We are solely focused in tomorrow’s game right now. Mohammedan SC is a huge name in Indian Football. They have huge experience compared to my team. We have to pull up our socks and push ourselves harder against them.

Who are the real threats to thwart your I-League dream?

Aizawl FC primarily. Besides them LoneStar Kashmir and Mohammedan SC are also there. You can’t write them off.

Daniel Bedami, Adelaja – the big strikers might impose some real threats to your defence line. How are you planning to diffuse them?

Bedami, Ashim Biswas, Adelaja all are capable of outplaying you on his day. The plan must be for all but for any particular one. We are going to play or natural game. The end result is not in our hand, so better not to be worried about that.

What would be your primary planning against the Black Panthers tomorrow?

Generally I prefer either 4-1-4-1 or 4-4-2. It depends on the match scenario. Opening 10 minutes are utterly crucial. Accordingly we will progress further.
