CHANDIGARH: Minerva Academy FC will be playing their seventh match of the final round of the Second Division I- League on Thursday as they take on mighty Mohammedan Sporting at the Sector 17 Stadium in Chandigarh.

Both the sides come into the match with victories behind them. Minerva have two back-to-back victories against Lonestar Kashmir FC and Gangtok Himalayan SC while Mohammedan SC defeated high-flying NEROCA FC in their last encounter in Kolkata.

Looking back at the first leg match between the two, the Minervans emerged the winner, courtesy of a goal each from Sehijpal Singh and Arshdeep Singh. Lancine Toure pulled one back late into the match.

“The victory in Kolkata was a good one and serves as a confidence booster for us. But that’s history now and will have little relevance when we take the field tomorrow,” said coach Surinder Singh. He added, “Mohammedan Sporting are a very good side and they have come back very strong and are now challenging for the title.”

Second in the table with 11 points, two behind Dempo SC, this match is of big significance for Minerva. A win will take them to the top of the table if Dempo SC fails to win against Gangtok Himalayan at the same time tomorrow.

Mohammedan are on 7 points from 5 games and has got the advantage of playing a match less.

Meanwhile, the management of Minerva Academy FC once again urges the people of Chandigarh to come and witness the match. Its probably the first time in the history of Chandigarh that a club with over 100 years of history will be playing on its soil.

To promote football in the region and to connect fans in Chandigarh with Minerva, the management has decided to keep free-entry for public.

The match kicks off at 4:00 PM tomorrow.
